What is the future of Morning Musume?

"What is the future for Morning Musume?"

A question that a lot of people are asking, and have been for quite some time. And now, without their weekly midday TV show, after it, along with Berikyuu, was replaced with the new show Yorosen last week, the question is more relevent than ever. These are some of my opinions and predictions on the matter...

Yorosen could either rekindle that dying flame that some would call Morning Musume as it is exponentially more interesting than the Haromoni@ that so many people have complained about. Now, however, a lot of people are revealing the hypocrisy in their opinions after claiming that nothing could be worse than HM@, they say that they would rather HM@ or no show at all over the current Yorosen. I couldn't disagree with them more. HM@ drove me to boredom and I stopped watching it regularly a long time ago. Yorosen though, I have watched semi-religiously since it started, however (the same goes for Berikyuu, though). And I believe that the show is interesting enough to recieve a major lift in TV ratings over HM@ was. (For reference, in the last season HM@ was averaging around 1% and Berikyuu around 3%) The main problem is the time slot. Yorosen isn't quite necissarily too short, considering that all 5 days added together means the weekly airtime isn't much less than Haromoni@. But, unlike Haromoni@ which aired on a Sunday afternoon, Yorosen airs after midnight every weeknight. This surely means the number of possible viewers is much lower. But I'm sure they can pull through considering that Berikyuu was the same and still achieved higher ratings.

As you may be aware, Takahashi Ai is also about to star in a winter drama which will air from January 8 to March 12 on the NHK Broadcasting Network. I, and many others, see this as a great oppertunity for Ai-chan to get a little publicity. However, Cotton Cloth posted this at Musume-Central; "Presumably this is a prelude to graduation." which recieved a very skeptical response. But I agree with him. I've had my predictions for several months that Ai-chan will graduate at the end of the Morning Musume Spring 2009 concert. And after saying that I really want Ai to graduate* I got a lot of hate-comments. But this drama could very easily be the prelude to her graduation, perhaps she is trying to break from the idol image like so many other H!P artists have been doing and will try a career in acting.

*Note: I have nothing against Ai-chan, in fact, she's one of my favourite members of the current line-up. But she is very clearly exhausted, and has been in the group for 7 years now. By the Spring concert she will have been leader for 2 years. She can't keep up with the rest of the group for much longer. And I think it's in her best interests, and ours as fans, if she were to leave the group sooner rather than later. (If you disagree or have your own opinion on this then feel free to comment. But hatemail will be deleted.)

For the last few singles, sales figures have been fairly unstable as some sell over 55k and other's fail to reach 50. Despite that, every one of Morning Musume's singles have charted in the Top 5 in Oricron (barring Morning Coffee and Mikan). And with the still-fresh 8th Generation bringing new life into the group. Despite the group's decline, I think that Morning Musume still have a bright future yet. But please, Morning Musume (and the rest of Hello!Project) relies on you buying their singles. Even if you download the music from Hello!Online or some other place, I encourage you to buy some of the songs - even if it's only your favourite group/singles from time to time. The cause of the decline in H!P sales isn't anything to do with the quality, but the number of people who think "Why buy it when I can download it for free?" And yes. I have seen people talk like that.

So what are your views? Do you think that Morning Musume's future is as bleak as some would have us believe? Or is their really a silver lining to every dark cloud?

"Hangry & Angry" Rocking the World

Photobucket

Well, this is shocking news. It's just been revealed that former Morning Musume members Yoshizawa Hitomi and former Biyuden leader Ishikawa Rika will be teamed up in a brand new Hello!Project Unit.

Hangry & Angry, named after the Harajuku gothic-lolita fashion store which the new unit seems to be promoting, are a very interesting unit. Not because of the members, as an IshiYoshi unit is something alot of fans have been begging for for quite a while.

No, what is interesting about this unit is the style. The Punk-Rock feel to, not only the costumes, but their debut single Kill Me Kiss Me makes this unit feel very fresh and original. I think it's safe to say that this is something UFA have never tried before.

The song carries with the style very well. And fans of the Punk genre can really get into this. I'm more of a Heavy Metal guy myself, but I'll settle with Punk-Rock. But this song really doesn't appeal to the usual market. A bigger market? Maybe. Maybe not. But I don't think alot of the more casual H!P fans will have quite so much interest in this song as the hardcore wota and Visual Kei fans.

Jingisukan Tarutaru Mix - New PV

Photobucket

Earlier I was recommended a look at a new Jingisukan PV by a couple of people, including shwee who said "Maasa is center". My friends know me well. Anyway, I've checked it out, and I love it. The old PV we saw before with the dancing sheep was weird, and it may have been fun, but it was in no way a great PV - not in comparison to this one, anyway.

And indeed, just as I had been told, Maasa is the center of the PV as she takes the most prominant place at the top of the stairs, and with slight alterations to her costume to help match the original song by German pop-group Dschingis khan, she stands out the most in the video, despite being stuck at the back of the group.

What I love about this one is that it has a healthy combination of footage we have already seen from the various PVs (including the Mongolian Dance Shot ver. which happened to be my favourite version) of the original Berryz cover, as well as some performance footage from the original german Dschingis Khan versions. Also included is some brand-new footage which is very simple and mimics the 1980's style of the original song and performance.

The dancing sheep that baffled, confused, and terrified us all also makes a re-appearance in this version, but this time in cartoon-form, which is significantly less terrifying than the old photo-realistic looking sheep used in the previous remix PV.

As for the song itself, I've already cast my opinions on that in a previous entry, and readers of this blog will hopefully remember the positive entry I made on it. But I'll say this, almost a month has passed this the single was released, and the song is as catchy as ever, and watching this PV will only put the weirdness of the song and video in your head for another 3 weeks, but it is still hard to fault such a great remix.

And on that note, here is the new PV.

Yorosen : So it Begins

TV-Tokyo
月曜~金曜 (Monday-Friday)

テレビ東京「よろセン!」 (Yorosen)
※10/6(月)スタート!

月・火・木 - 24:53~25:00
水 - 25:13~25:20
金 - 25:53~26:00

Yorishiku Sensei (Yorosen) has just aired for the first time, you will probably find the episode on Hello!Online tracker or on YouTube within the next few hours. (And as soon as I find it, I'll embed it in this post). Those of you who have read my post on (or were already using) KeyholeTV may have been lucky enough to watch it live. If not, don't fall behind, find my previous post on Keyhole while you have the oppertunity and get the software (or anything better you find elsewhere). The broadcasting times are found above.

Don't read Japanese? Want to know what those times are in your respective time zone? Refer to this:
  • Monday: Japanese (JST) - 24:53~25:00 | British (GMT) - 16:53~17:00 | US-Eastern (EST) - 11:53~12:00
  • Tuesday: Japanese (JST) - 24:53~25:00 | British (GMT) - 16:53~17:00 | US-Eastern (EST) - 11:53~12:00
  • Wednesday: Japanese (JST) - 25:13~25:20 | British (GMT) - 17:13~17:20 | US-Eastern (EST) - 12:13~12:20
  • Thursday: Japanese (JST) - 24:53~25:00 | British (GMT) - 16:53~17:00 | US-Eastern (EST) - 11:53~12:00
  • Friday: Japanese (JST) - 25:53~26:00 | British (GMT) - 17:53~18:00 | US-Eastern (EST) - 12:53~13:00
So. Now that you know. If you haven't seen the first episode already, and don't want any spoilers, don't read beyond this point.

It started with all of the Morning Musume members sitting in the classroom (apparently the theme of the show) at their desks chatting. When Reina, their sensei, walks in and a pretty sexy outfit that reminds me a little of the costume that Yuuko wore in the "Until the Bus Comes" skits. Anyway, she came in and introduced herself. And then proceeded to start sticking things on the board. Cards with text on them I didn't understand. This episode needs a translation to be fully enjoyed. And I hope someone out there will translate. Without understanding what is on the board, the meaning of the entire episode was lost on me and will likely be lost on alot of other people.

Please, someone, translate these 3.5 minute shows!

(EDIT: I've found a copy of the video on YouTube. | EDIT2: Replaced with working subbed version.)

Berikore! shirts to be owned.

Well, I just put my order into Ohta's store for the shirt you see above. It'll be my first Hello!Project shirt and I'm happy it'll be my favourite idol's one. Although I was tempted to go for Miyabi's instead, for the sole reason that I liked the colour.

If you're interested in ordering one too, you can find them on Ohta's store here. But be fast, if you try after October 9th it'll be too late, as he'll have already sent away for the order.

I'm looking forward to recieving mine. And I'm sorry that this entry wasn't very interesting. But there are two pretty Maasa pics up above to keep you parasites happy.

Berryz Koubou go head to head!

I've just learned about something spectacular.

Something that will change my world forever.

Berryz Koubou will be appearing in a new Stage Play in November. A play that, interestingly, has been titled 「Berryz工房 VS Berryz工房」. Clearly such a confrontation, Berryz clashing with none other than themselves, would be so sweet - triple coated in a thick layer of pure win - that it would melt the eyes of anyone to even look at it with the simplistic awesomeness.

Surely, anyone who goes to see this play live will return home a changed man. And I envy anyone lucky enough to be in Japan during the 12 days that it is being performed. Now the Video Games Live concert which I'll be going to see in London on the 24th of October (anyone else going? Drop me a letter) seems pointless, and I've been looking forward to it for about 3 months now. Anyone want to switch places? I'll even sell you my arm (just not the right one - I need that one). In fact, if there happens to be any form of Handshake event happening at the same time I'll throw in my leg too.

I hear you. "Dran. What are you talking about. No play, Berryz or not, will ever be awesome enough to warrant limb-selling." Well, I'm easily hyped about something I love. And I love Berryz. And if the play is anywhere near as good as their 2006 play then I have every reason to be as excited about it.

"Which is stronger?
Which is prettier?
Which is bitterer?
Which is more beautiful?
Which is right?
But
Who is who?"

And for those that haven't seen their previous stage-play (shame on you!), I've embedded it into this post for you (you'll need VeohTV to watch the full video)... Right here:
